Summer Reading Program

(File photo)

Library Corner for August 24, 2023

There’s a diehard bunch of youngsters who have faithfully attended Check it Out! — this year’s Summer Reading Program — for the past two months. One boy’s mother suggested she take him that morning to get slushies and go to the park instead of the library program.

His response was unequivocal: “No way am I missing the library program just for slushies.”

We want to thank our summer students, Keyanna Blackport, Jaden Norman, and Zoe Norman, who have done a stellar job of planning and carrying out some of the most exciting and educational activities ever this year, with crafts, gardening, science and technology activities and even cooking!

Watch our Facebook page for the announcement of draw winners for the great prizes that motivated all their time spent reading. Eager readers aged nine and up collectively clocked more than 5,500 nose-in-a-book minutes during the summer. This qualified them for tokens to enter the prize draw. Total time spent reading by all children aged five-13 added up to more than 1,800 hours!

Children:

Though it’s sad to see the end of summer vacation, we plan to celebrate the great time we’ve had this year during Summer Reading Program 2023. Your whole family is welcome to join us at Heartland Bowl for a fun round of bowling on Friday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. Spots are limited so be sure to sign up early.

Even babies respond to the song and rhythm of the music and stories we share at Read and Rhyme each Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 10:30. If you have little people newborn to five years old, bring them along and join the fun. For even more motivation, download the free app 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. We’ll reward you with a small prize each time you reach a reading milestone.

Teens & ’Tweens:

It’s the last bonfire of the summer! Join us in saying farewell to these carefree days by roasting marshmallows and swapping stories by firelight on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Ages 10+.

Adults:

Do you have tea cups lying around unused?

Bring them to Crystal’s Craft Club where you’ll transform one into a clever pincushion, Thursday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m. Teacups will be provided if you don’t have one. Please pre-register.

The games and activities at Minds in Motion help prevent further cognitive decline. Join us Thursdays at 1 p.m. for a fun and stimulating hour with others who understand what it’s like to experience memory loss. Caregivers are welcome too.

Reader’s Circle Book Club meets Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss this month’s book, The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. You can always count on a lively discussion so stop in at the library for a copy of the book and join us.

Do you love colour and paint? Afternoon Friends will be rocking the art of painting on stone on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. Adults who enjoy socializing with others who like crafts, games, and fun are welcome.

All Ages:

Are you motivated to get exercise? Why not borrow our Family Fitness day or week pass to make use of the great facilities at the pool and gym downstairs? These passes are always in circulation so call ahead to book your turn.

If there’s something you’re looking for, end your search at the library. We can help you find language learning resources and local history information, or clean your scratched CDs and DVDs for just $2/disc.

We have technology you can use to digitize your videotapes and photo slides, and we offer access to advanced genealogical records. On top of all that, every Thursday afternoon, there’s an experienced employment coach to help you update your personal resume. Come in today to see how we can help you.
